Casinos
September 19th, 2008Originally meaning a small villa or pavilion built for pleasure activities in Italian, the term ‘casino’ has come a long way from 1638, when one of the first known casinos existed in Venice. Only since the post-19th century, casinos came to mean a place where gambling happens and today there is almost 4000 casinos spread all over the world with the industry turnover touching a whopping 30 billion dollars. However many casinos also offer live entertainment as part of its pleasure package.
Casinos are most concentrated where there is a major tourist attraction with hotels, restaurants, shopping arcades etc. Earlier called saloons, American casinos have an up and down history with gambling being an outlawed activity in many states in the early 20th century. However, with inception of legality in the casino business, Las ‘Sin City’ Vegas and Atlantic City, New Jersey have come to the forefront of being world’s most popular casinos along with Monte Carlo, considered a gambler’s paradise.
Open only for those past the age of license, casinos are not just meant for games like slot machines or for dumb luck such as baccarat and roulette; some casino games need quite a bit of skill from the players as in blackjack and poker. Casinos are always giving out free items called comps to its clients, with the gambler playing for higher stakes being entitled for more benefits or comps. When a player wins a wager, the casinos give him a percentage or payout.
A perennial issue with casinos has been security. Since large amount money transaction happens in the course of the games being played, there always remains a temptation among the players or employees to pocket some of the free flowing dough. Hence all casinos emphasize on a specialized surveillance department, be it cameras and close circuit televisions or trained individuals enforcing measures to prevent and also check criminal activity.
